Harlipo Town, Kolahun District – A tragic scene unfolded early this morning along the banks of the Kaiha River when a local teacher, identified as Brother Patrick, reportedly attempted to take his own life by jumping into the water.
The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the Kolahun District, was narrowly averted thanks to the swift and courageous actions of another teacher, Brother John Bombo, who was nearby when it happened. According to eyewitnesses, Brother Patrick entered the river in an apparent suicide attempt, but Brother Bombo immediately sprang into action and managed to pull him out before the worst could occur.
After the dramatic rescue, those present reported that Brother Patrick, though physically safe, appeared deeply confused and emotionally unstable. In a chilling moment that underscored the severity of his mental state, he reportedly expressed regret that Brother Bombo had intervened, suggesting he had “done something wrong” by saving him.
The underlying causes that led to Brother Patrick’s attempt remain unknown. However, the incident has triggered a wave of concern among residents, with many calling for urgent attention to the mental health needs of teachers and community members alike.
Local authorities, along with the police, have launched an investigation to determine what might have contributed to the incident. As the community grapples with the emotional weight of the event, support services are expected to be deployed to assist Brother Patrick and provide psychological support to others affected.

Mental health advocates in the region are urging the Ministry of Education and health stakeholders to increase outreach efforts, particularly for educators in rural areas who may be struggling in silence.
This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
