President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated former Chief Justice Cllr. Gloria Maya Musu Scott to serve as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL). This nomination follows her appointment as Acting Chairperson in December 2024 .
Cllr. Musu Scott’s nomination is subject to confirmation by the Liberian Senate. If confirmed, she will officially lead NOCAL’s board, overseeing strategic decisions in Liberia’s oil and gas sector.
A seasoned legal professional, Cllr. Musu Scott served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1997 to 2003. She has also been a senator and chaired the Constitution Review Committee, contributing significantly to Liberia’s legal and political landscape.
Her appointment comes after a tumultuous period. In December 2023, she was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her niece, Charloe Musu. However, in August 2024, the Supreme Court acquitted her, citing insufficient evidence to uphold the conviction .
President Boakai’s decision to nominate Cllr. Musu Scott reflects his administration’s commitment to leveraging experienced professionals in key sectors.
