An officer of the Liberia National Police (LNP), identified only as Officer Remeo, has been arrested and detained following allegations that he raped a 17-year-old female suspect while she was in custody at the LNP headquarters in Cestos. The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, June 6, 2025.
The teenager was being held in a withholding cell, awaiting court proceedings on a drug-related charge, when the alleged assault took place. River Cess County Attorney Martin M. Tumoe confirmed the incident in an interview with Verity Rivercess, stating that an investigation is underway by the LNP’s Professional Standards Division and the Child and Social Protection Unit.
Amid public concerns over the accused officer’s transfer out of River Cess, Attorney Tumoe clarified that Officer Remeo was moved to Grand Bassa County for a “more intensive investigation” under the supervision of the LNP’s regional office. He assured residents that Remeo would be returned to River Cess to face prosecution.
“We ask the citizens to be patient as we allow the legal process to take its full course,” Tumoe said.
Authorities have conducted a medical examination on the survivor, though Tumoe declined to disclose details, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation.

The case has ignited widespread outrage, with residents demanding swift and transparent justice. It has also raised serious concerns about the treatment of detainees and the conduct of law enforcement officers in the county.
As investigations proceed, civil society groups and the public are closely monitoring the case to ensure accountability and justice for the victim.
This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more details emerge.
