The Liberia National Police (LNP) has issued an official statement addressing the controversy surrounding the recent arrest of Mr. Janga Kowo, Chairman of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), following public backlash over the manner in which the arrest was carried out.
According to the LNP, Mr. Kowo was apprehended based on probable cause but was released immediately upon arrival at the LNP Headquarters. The brief detention has nonetheless sparked widespread reactions, particularly over concerns of excessive force used during the arrest process.

In response to the growing public outcry, the Inspector General of Police has ordered the Professional Standards Division to conduct a full review of video evidence and other relevant materials tied to the incident.
“A thorough inquiry into the use of force will be conducted, and upon completion, the findings will be made public,” the LNP stated in its release.
The police emphasized their ongoing commitment to upholding law and order while calling on citizens to remain cooperative and informed.
“The collective commitment of every citizen is essential in maintaining peace and ensuring public safety,” the statement added.
This incident adds to mounting tensions in the country’s political climate, with the CDC labeling the arrest as “unwarranted intimidation,” although the LNP has yet to release full details of the “probable cause” that led to Kowo’s initial detention.
The LNP is urging the public to avoid speculation and to seek verified information as the investigation proceeds.
