Reports reaching Geez Liberia suggest that Representative Abu Kamara is currently facing health complications related to a spike in his blood pressure. According to family sources, this is not an unusual condition for the Honorable, and they had advised him to decline the Liberia National Police’s invitation, citing medical grounds. However, he reportedly chose to appear, fearing that sending an excuse might be perceived as an attempt to temporarily evade justice.
Sources say his health began to deteriorate overnight while in police custody, and his condition worsened by the time he and fellow lawmakers, former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, Rep. Dixon Seboe, and Rep. Jacob Debee, were taken to the Monrovia City Court on Saturday morning.
While in court, a formal appeal was made for Rep. Kamara to be released on bond to take his prescribed medication, but the request was denied. He was subsequently remanded at the Monrovia Central Prison.
Family members and his legal team reportedly rushed to the facility to plead with the prison sheriff to allow a certified doctor access to Rep. Kamara for immediate medical evaluation and treatment. However, prison officials stated that there are procedures in place for such requests, and as of now, those protocols cannot be bypassed.
In stark contrast, Representative Prescilla Cooper of Bong County, who is a member of the ruling Unity Party, was reportedly granted bond and released to her lawyer Friday night after allegedly collapsing during detention at the LNP Headquarters.
Her release, based on medical grounds, raises serious questions: Why was bond granted to Rep. Cooper, but denied to Rep. Kamara, who is also facing a medical emergency? Is this a case of compassion based on health, or convenience based on political affiliation?
Both lawmakers were reported to be in distress. One was freed. The other remains behind bars, along with three other opposition lawmakers, awaiting a possible bond hearing on Monday.
