The Liberia National Police (LNP) has announced the launch of an official investigation into the death of Ms. Nancy Musu Kiatamba, a resident of Vai Town, Old Road Community, following her brief detention by police officers earlier this month.
According to a press release issued Tuesday, Ms. Kiatamba was arrested on May 9, 2025, by Inspector Saywon T. Wulah of Zone 3 Depot 1 after an alleged verbal confrontation. She was released on the same day. However, five days later, on May 14, the LNP received a formal complaint from Ms. Moimeh Thomas, Ms. Kiatamba’s guardian, reporting her death and alleging that it resulted from an assault by the arresting officer.
In response, Inspector General of Police Gregory Coleman immediately directed the Professional Standards Department to begin an administrative investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings have led to the recommendation that Inspector Wulah be interdicted, pending the outcome of the probe.

As part of the ongoing process, the Inspector General has also ordered a forensic autopsy to determine the scientific cause of death. The police say the results of the autopsy, along with the full findings of the internal investigation, will inform any further administrative or criminal actions.
“The Liberia National Police remains committed to due process and assures the public that this matter is being addressed in strict accordance with Police Administrative Instructions,” the statement read.
Ms. Kiatamba’s death has sparked growing concerns among citizens about accountability in the security sector, particularly surrounding alleged incidents of police brutality. The LNP has not provided a timeline for the release of the autopsy results but insists that the case is being handled with urgency and transparency.
