Popular Liberian comedian Jabateh The Kru Man has been confirmed as the only active case of Mpox in Liberia, according to the latest update released by the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL).
From January 1, 2024 to May 11, 2025, NPHIL has recorded 78 confirmed Mpox cases across 14 counties, with no reported deaths. Among the 652 suspected cases, 572 samples were received by the national reference lab, all of which were tested. While 77 individuals have recovered, Jabateh currently stands as the lone active case undergoing medical care.

Jabateh, known for his raw humor and bold Kru-language comedy, confirmed his diagnosis in a Facebook post on Friday, stating in a video that he recently visited Lofa County where he may have contracted the virus while interacting with a someone he knew. His fans have flooded social media with prayers and jokes, blending concern with the signature humor that has made him a household name.
Health officials say Jabateh took himself in for treatment today and is responding well.

Despite the widespread distribution, the outbreak has remained non-lethal, with zero deaths reported to date.
NPHIL is urging the public to stay alert and continue reporting suspected Mpox symptoms, which include fever, swollen lymph nodes, rash, and body aches. Anyone with signs is encouraged to call the national Mpox hotline at 4455.
Jabateh’s case has sparked fresh public interest in the disease, prompting NPHIL to increase community awareness through radio and social media campaigns, especially in the affected counties and quarantine the affected people.
