A bombshell investigation has uncovered that the former County Health Officer (CHO) of Gbarpolu County, widely known as Dr. Peter Matthew George, is in fact an impostor operating under a stolen identity.
The man, whose real name is Alfred Matthias, has been practicing medicine in Liberia under the false identity of “Dr. Peter M. George”, a legitimate doctor from Sierra Leone who tragically died during the 2014 Ebola outbreak.
According to credible findings, Matthias fraudulently assumed the identity of the late Sierra Leonean doctor, using his medical credentials to infiltrate Liberia’s health system. In what critics are describing as a gross failure of regulatory oversight, Matthias not only practiced medicine illegally but rose to prominent positions within the sector, including Medical Director at Esther and Jereline (E&J) Medical Center in Ganta, Nimba County, and later, County Health Officer of Gbarpolu County.
Sources familiar with the case say during his time in Gbarpolu, Matthias was earning over $4,000 USD monthly, paid from public coffers under the guise of being a qualified medical doctor.
Even more disturbing are allegations that during his tenure as a “surgeon,” Matthias performed medical procedures that allegedly led to the deaths of several Liberians. The full extent of the damage caused by his fraudulent medical practice is still being assessed.

Health experts and civil society actors are now calling for swift criminal prosecution and a deeper audit into how someone with falsified credentials could so easily manipulate the Liberian healthcare system.
As of press time, the Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC), which recently revoked Matthias’ fake license after uncovering academic discrepancies, has yet to comment on the identity theft claims. Law enforcement agencies are reportedly reviewing the case for potential criminal action.
The Liberian public is now left asking: How many more fake doctors are out there?
