In a historic move signaling Liberia’s rising prominence in regional security and logistics cooperation, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has officially announced that the 2025 West Africa Logistics Conference (WALC) will be hosted in Liberia. This marks the first time the nation will serve as the venue for the high-level international event.
Brigadier General George “Dutch” Dietrich, AFRICOM’s Director of Logistics, made the announcement, calling the decision a milestone for both Liberia and the region.
“I am thrilled to announce this significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to strengthen regional collaboration and logistics capabilities,” said Brig. Gen. Dietrich. “Logistics remains the backbone of all operations, and is especially critical in a place as vast as the African continent.”
Set for 2025, the WALC will bring together military leaders, policymakers, and logistics professionals from across West Africa and beyond to tackle pressing challenges such as supply chain security, doctrine harmonization, logistics resilience, and sustainable procurement.
According to AFRICOM, the conference will feature expert panels, strategic discussions, and knowledge-sharing sessions aimed at improving logistics readiness for military operations, humanitarian missions, and disaster response efforts.
Liberia’s selection as host was met with praise from AFRICOM, which highlighted the country’s dedication to regional stability and its growing role in international defense cooperation. Brig. Gen. Dietrich expressed appreciation for the Liberian government and the Armed Forces of Liberia for their readiness to co-host such a major undertaking.
“Liberia’s role in regional peace and security is growing, and we are proud to partner with a country committed to cooperation and development,” he noted.
The economic and diplomatic implications of hosting the WALC are significant. The event is expected to boost Liberia’s economy through increased tourism, investment interest, and international visibility. It will also spotlight the nation’s logistical infrastructure and its capacity to host high-profile security events, reflecting its broader progress in post-conflict reconstruction, institutional development, and regional integration.
Since the end of its civil conflict, Liberia has benefitted from AFRICOM’s continued support through military training, infrastructure development, and humanitarian efforts. The upcoming conference is seen as a deepening of that partnership and a reflection of mutual trust.
Preparations for the 2025 WALC will continue in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Liberia and other regional actors in the months ahead.
