The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has taken decisive action against Wologizi FC head coach Jasper Benfelix and four referees, suspending them indefinitely over allegations of match manipulation. The shocking development has sent ripples through Liberian football, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the game.
The scandal erupted after an alleged WhatsApp message from Coach Benfelix surfaced, in which he reportedly vowed to do “anything” to help his former club, Nimba Kwado, avoid relegation if given the opportunity. The message quickly spread among football circles, drawing scrutiny from fans and officials alike.
Shortly after, Wologizi FC forfeited a critical match against Nimba Kwado, a decision that allowed Kwado to escape the relegation zone. The timing of the forfeit, coupled with Benfelix’s alleged message, prompted the LFA to launch an immediate investigation.
While the LFA has not yet released full details, the association confirmed that Benfelix’s suspension is a precautionary measure, pending the outcome of the probe.
“The decision is in line with the LFA’s commitment to maintain the integrity of the game,” the association stated. “We take these allegations very seriously and will take the necessary steps to ensure fairness and transparency remain at the heart of Liberian football.”
In a related move, the LFA has provisionally suspended four referees, Koffa Doe, Thomas N. Konah, Julius Pongay, and Emmanuel Tarley, over suspected involvement in match manipulation. The officials have been barred from all LFA-sanctioned activities until investigations are concluded.

The suspensions come amid growing frustration among Liberian football fans, who have long criticized corruption and questionable officiating in domestic leagues. The LFA has vowed full cooperation with its Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, promising accountability at all levels.
The scandal has divided opinions, with some supporters demanding harsh punishments if guilt is proven, while others caution against rushing to judgment.
“If these allegations are true, it’s a disgrace to our football,” said Samuel Johnson, a longtime fan of Nimba Kwado. “We want fair competition, not backdoor deals.”
Meanwhile, Wologizi FC, which recently secured promotion to the First Division under Benfelix’s leadership, now faces scrutiny from the LFA Disciplinary Committee. The club has yet to issue an official statement.
As investigations continue, the LFA has assured stakeholders that it remains committed to cleaning up the sport. With Liberia’s football reputation on the line, many are watching closely to see how the governing body handles one of its most high-profile integrity cases in recent years.
For now, Coach Benfelix and the suspended referees await their fate, and Liberian football holds its breath.
