Liberia Electricity Corporation Backtracks on Power Promise, Announces Two-Day Outage in Monrovia
Just a day after the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) assured citizens of stable power supply under its new interim management, residents of Monrovia and surrounding areas are bracing for another frustrating setback. The LEC has announced an unexpected two-day power outage, contradicting its earlier pledge of uninterrupted electricity in the coming weeks.
In a public notice issued Tuesday, the LEC stated that the shutdown was necessitated by an emergency maintenance request from TRANSCO CLSG, the operator of the CLSG Transmission Network. The maintenance work, scheduled for April 9 and 10, 2025, will cut power from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, affecting large portions of the capital and its environs.
The announcement has sparked frustration among Liberians, many of whom had cautiously welcomed the LEC’s recent assurances of improved service. Social media reactions ranged from sarcastic remarks about “business as usual” to outright anger over the recurring instability in electricity supply.
“First, they tell us no more outages, and now this? It’s the same old story,” lamented James Kollie, a small business owner in Paynesville. “How can we run our shops or keep food fresh when the power keeps going off without warning?”
The LEC has apologized for the inconvenience, citing the urgency of the maintenance work to ensure long-term reliability. However, the timing has left many questioning the corporation’s ability to deliver on its promises.
For now, residents and businesses are advised to prepare for the blackout, as Liberia’s struggle with consistent electricity continues.
