The National Elections Commission (NEC) has confirmed that one of six trucks transporting electoral materials for next Tuesday’s senatorial by-election in Nimba County experienced a mechanical failure on Friday, April 18.
The truck, with license plate #C-5211, suffered a clutch failure along the Gbarnga Highway while carrying non-sensitive polling station materials. NEC officials have reassured the public that the remaining five trucks, carrying critical election items, including ballots, have successfully arrived at NEC offices in Lower and Upper Nimba.
The NEC emphasized that the stranded truck only contained translucent ballot boxes filled with stationery and administrative supplies such as rulers, stamps, scissors, pens, lamps, batteries, stickers, notepads, and rubber bands, essential for setting up polling stations but not directly linked to vote casting or counting.
Security personnel from the Liberia National Police and NEC were onboard the vehicle at the time of the breakdown, ensuring the safety of the materials.
The Commission stated that its Operations Department began dispatching election materials from its Central Warehouse in Sinkor earlier today, with the process continuing smoothly despite the minor setback.

“NEC remains fully committed to conducting a free, fair, and transparent by-election in Nimba,” the Commission said in its statement. “We assure all stakeholders, particularly the people of Nimba, that this incident will not disrupt the electoral process.”
With the senatorial by-election just days away, the NEC has called on citizens to remain confident in the electoral process, stressing that all sensitive materials, including ballots, have been securely delivered.
Authorities are working to recover the stranded truck and its contents, but voters can rest assured that the election will proceed as scheduled on Tuesday.
