Liberia’s national football team, the Lone Star, will take on Sao Tome and Principe today in a pivotal 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.
The match, set for 4:00 PM local time, is a must-win for Liberia as they seek to improve their standing in Group H after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Tunisia on March 19. Currently in third place with three points, a victory against bottom-placed Sao Tome and Principe would strengthen Liberia’s chances of advancing to the next round of qualifiers.
The Lone Star are coming off a disappointing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign, where they finished at the bottom of Group E with just four points. This extended Liberia’s 23-year absence from the continental tournament, with their last appearance dating back to 2002.
Interim head coach Thomas Kojo has emphasized the need for a stronger attacking performance after Liberia failed to score against Tunisia. Despite the setback, the team remains optimistic about their World Cup qualifying prospects.
Sao Tome and Principe, ranked 183rd in the FIFA rankings, have struggled in the qualifiers, losing all three of their matches, including a 2-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea last week. Their defensive vulnerabilities could present an opportunity for Liberia to secure a much-needed victory.
This will be the second meeting between the two teams in the current qualifiers. Liberia won the first encounter 1-0 in Sao Tome last November, thanks to a second-half goal.
With both teams in need of a positive result, today’s clash is expected to be tightly contested. Liberia will rely on home support to push for three points, while Sao Tome will aim to secure their first points in the qualifiers.
A win for Liberia would move them closer to the top two spots in Group H, currently occupied by Tunisia and Malawi.
Kickoff: 4:00 PM (GMT)
Venue: Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, Monrovia
Fans are encouraged to attend and support the Lone Star in this critical fixture. The match will also be broadcast live on Liberia Sports Network and select streaming platforms.
