Embattled Speaker Cllr. Fonati Koffa has returned to Liberia from the United States amid planned visitation efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to mediate what has been described as a crisis in the House of Representatives.
ECOWAS is deploying a high-level delegation led by the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Right Honourable Hadja Memounatou Ibrahima, to facilitate dialogue over the ongoing legislative impasse. The delegation is expected to arrive in Monrovia on Sunday, March 23, 2025.
The return of Speaker Koffa coincides with the absence of the majority Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Honourable Richard Nagbe Koon, who is currently abroad on an international legislative mission in neighboring Ivory Coast. This has left the House in a state of uncertainty as ECOWAS prepares to intervene.
The mediation effort comes after the House of Representatives rejected its chosen representatives to the ECOWAS Parliament, raising questions about how the House will respond to the ECOWAS-backed initiative. The central issue now is whether the House, under the leadership of Speaker Koon, will accept the regional body’s intervention or maintain its current stance.
As ECOWAS ramps up its efforts, the focus remains on Monrovia, where the delegation’s arrival could mark a pivotal moment in the ongoing developments within Liberia’s legislature.
