President Joseph Boakai has officially lifted the suspension of Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, allowing her to return as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC).
This decision was made after a crucial meeting on Wednesday, February 18, 2025, at the Executive Mansion. The gathering included top officials from NEC, the ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, and senior government representatives.
For weeks, tension had been brewing within NEC, leading to internal conflicts and job dismissals. However, after thorough discussions, an agreement was reached to restore harmony within the Commission. This also means some NEC staff who were previously dismissed will now be reinstated.
President Boakai made it clear that he wants the NEC to function as a united and professional body. He urged the Commissioners to work together and avoid any division that could undermine the public’s trust in the institution responsible for managing Liberia’s elections.
At the same time, the President acknowledged concerns raised by NEC employees, particularly those who staged a protest in December 2024. He has agreed to meet with their leadership to address their grievances and find solutions. However, he encouraged them to remain peaceful and cooperative as they continue their work.

With this resolution, President Boakai believes NEC can now focus on its critical task, conducting the upcoming Nimba County by-election following the passing of Senator Prince Y. Johnson. He reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding NEC’s credibility and ensuring that Liberia’s elections remain free, fair, and transparent.
This decision is a significant step toward restoring stability within the electoral body and keeping the democratic process on track.
