In a dramatic turn of events, embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives, J. Fonati Koffa, has fired back at the Majority bloc following their decision to remove him from his office. His response, laced with defiance and scathing accusations, paints a picture of a political showdown fueled by the interference o the executive.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives, Speaker Koffa dismissed the directive instructing him to vacate his office, calling it an “unlawful usurpation” of legislative authority. He questioned the legitimacy of the order, arguing that the plenary had voted to defer discussions on the matter until February 4, 2025.

“Please inform those who instructed you to write such a letter that they should obtain the office in the same manner as they obtained the speakership – illegally and with the force of the executive,” Koffa wrote, referencing what he perceives as undue interference from the Justice Ministry.
Koffa’s remarks highlight deepening cracks within the House of Representatives, with the battle for control now extending beyond the chamber into the physical spaces of power. His refusal to engage further on the matter signals an entrenched resistance, raising the question.
With this latest development, Liberia’s House of Representatives remains deeply divided, and the battle over the speakership is far from over. The question now is: Will the majority bloc heed Koffa’s defiance, or will they, as he provocatively suggests, resort to force once again?
