Richard Koon is no longer leaving room for speculation. The Majority Bloc Speaker has boldly declared his unwavering support for the Unity Party-led government, making it clear that his allegiance lies with President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s administration.
“I am the regime Speaker, fully backing President Boakai,” Koon asserted while addressing his district residents. “No opposition Speaker will advance our agenda.”
His comments come in the wake of a prolonged political standoff, during which he and a coalition of lawmakers, spanning both opposition and ruling factions, spent nearly two months at the RLJ Hotel in Paynesville in a bid to unseat Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
Koon argues that an opposition-led Speaker poses a direct obstacle to the government’s ability to implement its policies, particularly the ARREST Agenda, Boakai’s flagship development plan.

“We need a Speaker who shares our vision,” Koon emphasized. “An opposition Speaker won’t prioritize our developmental goals.”
His stance is not without controversy. Critics argue that the House of Representatives should serve as an independent body, rather than an extension of the presidency. However, Koon insists that effective governance requires alignment between the executive and legislative branches, pointing to Speaker Koffa as a roadblock to progress.
“Koffa is standing in the way of critical government initiatives,” he charged.
With Koon positioning himself as the government’s legislative enforcer, the battle lines in the House of Representatives are becoming clearer. The question now is: will his push for legislative loyalty strengthen the Boakai administration, or deepen political divisions?
