What should have been just another evening at a local cook shop in the Mat House community turned into a heartbreaking tragedy, leaving one man dead and another in police custody.
On February 22, 2025, a heated argument between two young men, Nunch Kekulah (29) and Leerod Wesseh (early 20s), escalated to a fatal confrontation that has left an entire community in shock. According to reports, the dispute started over an alleged insult directed at Kerkula’s sister, Leimu, the owner of the cook shop.
Kekulah claims that he was away in another town when his sister called to inform him that Wesseh had insulted her after she refused to serve him food. When he returned, he went searching for Wesseh, eventually finding him at another cook shop owned by a woman named Princess. Hoping to address the matter, Kekulah invited Wesseh back to his sister’s place to talk things over, but the conversation quickly spiraled out of control.
Eyewitnesses say voices were raised, tempers flared, and before anyone could intervene, Wesseh picked up a stick as if to attack. In response, Kekulah grabbed a kitchen knife, and in the scuffle that followed, Wesseh collapsed to the ground, bleeding. The young man was immediately rushed to the Liberian Government Hospital in Buchanan, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Speaking to investigators, Kekula expressed deep remorse. “I didn’t mean to stab him,” he said. “When I hugged him, he fell to the ground, and then I heard people shouting that he was hurt.”
Despite his regret, Kekulah was swiftly arrested and is currently being held at the Grand Bassa Police Headquarters as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, his sister, Leimu, has also been named a person of interest in the case.

This tragic event serves as a painful reminder of how quickly emotions can spiral out of control, leading to irreversible consequences. As the community grapples with the loss of a young life, the case highlights the urgent need for conflict resolution and non-violent ways to settle disputes.
With investigations ongoing, the people of Grand Bassa are left wondering, could this tragedy have been avoided?
