Monrovia, Liberia – January 9, 2025: Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has embarked on a significant mission to Kampala, Uganda, where he will represent His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., President of Liberia, at the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Summit. The summit, running from January 9 to 11, will focus on charting Africa’s agricultural future under the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).
The event, hosted at the Commonwealth Resort Hotel in Munyonyo, is a pivotal moment for the continent. With agriculture at the heart of many African economies, the summit aims to endorse the Kampala CAADP Declaration—a roadmap for transforming Africa’s agri-food systems from 2026 to 2035.
Leading Liberia’s delegation, which includes officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture, Vice President Koung will not only participate in high-level discussions but also deliver Liberia’s National Statement. His address is expected to reinforce Liberia’s commitment to agricultural development as a cornerstone of national progress.
Liberia’s Vision for Agricultural Transformation
Vice President Koung will spotlight President Boakai’s recent launch of the Liberia National Agriculture Development Plan (NADP) 2024-2030. This ambitious plan seeks to bolster food security, create jobs, and reduce poverty—objectives that align seamlessly with the broader CAADP framework. Under the ARREST Agenda, Liberia is prioritizing rural transformation and sustainable growth, with agriculture playing a central role.
Key Sessions at the Summit
The summit features two critical sessions. The first, on January 10, will bring together ministers from across Africa to review the CAADP Declaration and lay the groundwork for its implementation. The second, on January 11, will see Heads of State and Government endorse the draft ten-year CAADP Strategy and Action Plan.
Vice President Koung’s presence at these sessions underscores Liberia’s dedication to regional collaboration and sustainable agricultural policies. His bilateral meetings with other leaders and development partners will focus on strengthening Liberia’s agricultural sector and fostering international partnerships.
A Step Towards Africa’s Agricultural Revolution
As Africa aims to transform its agri-food systems over the next decade, Liberia’s participation in the AU Extraordinary Summit demonstrates a commitment to being part of the solution. With agriculture at the heart of its national development strategy, Liberia is poised to contribute meaningfully to a continent-wide push for agricultural innovation, investment, and sustainability.
The summit promises to be a defining moment for Africa’s agricultural future, and Liberia’s active involvement is a testament to its resolve to drive progress, both at home and across the continent.
