Liberian businessman Joe Momoh Kpoto, also known as “InsideOutside” Kpoto, has been arrested in connection with an alleged ¥13 million ($83,400) gold scam. A video circulating online shows Kpoto handcuffed and being escorted by Japanese police, raising questions about his actions and connections.
Kpoto, 40, is accused of orchestrating a fraudulent gold transaction on October 25, 2023, at a restaurant in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward. According to Tokyo police, Kpoto posed as a business consultant during a meeting with a 62-year-old company executive who had been approached by a Japanese broker to purchase approximately one kilogram of gold grains.
The victim was asked to bring ¥13 million in cash to the meeting, which Kpoto reportedly accepted in a paper bag. Police allege that Kpoto then swapped the money for notepads disguised as cash while pretending to count it under the table. The “gold grains” provided to the victim were later revealed to be copper painted to resemble gold. When the victim returned to confront Kpoto, the businessman had already fled the scene.
Authorities have linked Kpoto to at least five similar incidents across Tokyo between August 2023 and June 2024, resulting in total losses of ¥146 million ($933,000). After the October scam, Kpoto reportedly left Japan the next day but was arrested upon his return at Haneda Airport on November 13, 2024. Police are now investigating his connection to other fraudulent activities, as well as pursuing another foreign national allegedly involved in the scheme.
Kpoto’s arrest has drawn attention not only for the alleged crime but also for his political affiliations. The businessman once supported campaigns for prominent Liberian figures, including former President George Weah, current Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor, and opposition leaders Joseph Boakai and Benoni Urey. His alignment with multiple political factions raises questions about his loyalty and motivations.
Joe Kpoto is the son of the late Liberian Senator Kerkula Bayor Kpoto and holds British citizenship. While his political connections once earned him influence, his alleged involvement in this scandal has cast a shadow over his reputation.
The unfolding investigation by Japanese authorities will determine the extent of Kpoto’s involvement in this scheme and its broader implications. For now, the story serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of deceit and betrayal.
