Senator Nathaniel F. McGill has spoken out following the resignation of Amin Modad, the former Minister of Commerce and Industry. Modad’s departure comes in the wake of a controversy involving the questionable purchase of a vehicle by Medtech on behalf of the government. While McGill acknowledged that Modad’s resignation marks a step toward addressing the issue, he stressed that it falls short of addressing the larger problems that remain.
According to a recent report from the Liberian Senate, the situation goes deeper than just Modad’s involvement. The report revealed a serious violation of an agreement between Medtech and the Ministry of Commerce, with the Ministry illegally instructing Medtech to make the vehicle purchase. Even more concerning is that the Ministry did nothing to rectify the issue, despite being aware of the breach. As a result, the Senate has urged the General Auditing Commission (GAC) to launch a thorough investigation into the financial misconduct surrounding the deal.
Senator McGill emphasized that although Modad’s resignation is a step in the right direction, it does not clear either the Ministry or Medtech from their roles in the scandal. “Amin Modad’s resignation is important for accountability, but it doesn’t absolve the Ministry of Commerce or Medtech from responsibility,” McGill remarked. He insisted that investigations must continue to uncover the full extent of the wrongdoing, with those involved held accountable to restore public confidence in the government’s operations.
McGill went on to criticize the Ministry of Commerce for authorizing what he called an “unlawful transaction,” making it clear that both the Ministry and Modad should be held responsible for the violation. He added, “This isn’t just about one person stepping down. It’s about ensuring transparency, upholding the rule of law, and sending a message that such breaches will not be tolerated.”
McGill’s comments underscore the broader call for reform and accountability in Liberia’s public sector. His strong stance highlights the need for deeper investigations into cases of financial misconduct, ensuring that the people responsible face the consequences of their actions. As this story unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity within public institutions, and the need for constant vigilance to prevent corruption.
