On October 21, 2024, Speaker J. Fonati Koffa addressed the Liberian people with an urgent message regarding unsettling reports from the House of Representatives. In his statement, he revealed that on October 8, 2024, he had received credible intelligence of an attempt led by some of his colleagues, including Rep. Samuel Kogar, to gather signatures for his removal from office.
While Speaker Koffa expressed disappointment, he was not entirely surprised. The origins of this plot, he noted, were traced to a faction of lawmakers previously defeated in January, who now appeared determined to rekindle the fires of dissent. Even more troubling to Koffa was the unexpected participation of some of his once-loyal allies from the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and independent representatives in this effort.
Allegations of financial inducement have surfaced, suggesting that monetary offers may have played a role in the pursuit of these signatures. Speaker Koffa vowed to investigate these claims thoroughly, as they cast a dark shadow over the integrity of the legislative body.
While Koffa acknowledged that his colleagues may have legitimate concerns, he was quick to dismiss 99.9% of their grievances as politically motivated. He also criticized their approach, noting that hiring staff support units to forcefully break into rooms for unsanctioned sessions only further demonstrated a disregard for democratic processes.
“Democracy doesn’t go hand in hand with violence,” Koffa stated, urging those involved to bring their concerns to the regular Chamber and engage in civil discourse.
Having just returned to Liberia from an international engagement, Speaker Koffa is now fully briefed by State Security and his fellow lawmakers. He announced that on October 21, 2024, under his leadership, a leadership meeting would be held to address the tensions that erupted on Capitol Hill just days earlier.
While Koffa expressed gratitude to those who signed a resolution to state their concerns, he was particularly appreciative of those who reconsidered and rescinded their signatures. What initially started with 47 names had now dwindled to 37, with further updates expected.
Acknowledging the political divisions within the House, Koffa emphasized the importance of continuing the work of the Liberian people, stating that political disagreements should not obstruct the vital tasks at hand. He reaffirmed his commitment to due process and urged his colleagues to focus on serving their constituents above all else.
Speaker Koffa concluded his message by extending gratitude to a wide range of supporters, including former President George M. Weah, members of the CDC, ministers, civil society organizations, senators, and foreign partners for their concern and support.
As the House prepares for its final sitting of the 2024 Legislative Year on October 23, 2024, Speaker Koffa reiterated his commitment to uplifting Liberia and safeguarding its democratic institutions.
“Together, we will extinguish the threats against our democracy, and those who misuse public resources in an attempt to destabilize our nation will certainly come to regret it. God bless Liberia.” – He ended.
