Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti has acknowledged the critical role former President George Weah plays in Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The effort, which began under Weah’s leadership, now seeks his continued support to achieve this significant diplomatic milestone.
In a letter dated September 6, 2024, Minister Nyanti expressed gratitude to Weah for his ongoing contributions as a global peace ambassador. She emphasized how his international presence has bolstered Liberia’s image, both in terms of global recognition and national pride. “Your global presence as a peace ambassador has not only fortified Liberia’s position on the world stage but also brought pride and honor to our nation,” Nyanti wrote.
Minister Nyanti also pointed out that Weah’s work toward securing Liberia’s bid for a UNSC seat is essential, especially as the campaign intensifies. Under Weah’s leadership, the initiative to secure the seat was launched, and his role in maintaining peace, particularly during recent elections, has cemented his reputation as a global peace advocate.
As part of the country’s strategy leading up to the UN General Assembly, Nyanti has requested Weah to produce a one-minute video in support of Liberia’s campaign and to be physically present during critical events. She noted that his presence and message would underline Liberia’s contributions to the United Nations and the global peace and security agenda.
In addition to Weah, other prominent Liberians, including former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Nobel Laureate Leymah Gbowee, and current President Joseph N. Boakai, are expected to join efforts in championing the bid.
This collaborative campaign aims to highlight Liberia’s historical contributions to global peace and security as the country vies for the prestigious seat on the UNSC.
