The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has confirmed three new cases of Mpox, raising the total number of cases to five since the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ACDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in mid-August 2024.
The newly confirmed cases are from Lofa, Sinoe, and River Gee Counties. This comes just days after NPHIL launched its National Incident Management System (IMS) to coordinate a national response and mobilize resources against the outbreak.
According to NPHIL, the current trend of Mpox in Liberia, along with ongoing biomolecular characterization, signals a growing outbreak. In response, NPHIL is working closely with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and international partners to proactively prevent the further spread of the virus.
Last weekend, NPHIL teams visited border-entry points and assessed isolation centers in Nimba and Bong Counties to ramp up preparations, enhance contact tracing, and improve diagnostic procedures. These efforts are critical as cases are now emerging from opposite ends of the country.
As the National Incident Management System (IMS) continues to manage the outbreak response, the public is urged to remain calm and follow preventive measures, including regular handwashing, avoiding contact with suspected cases or animals, and practicing safe sexual behaviors. Communities are also advised to report any suspected Mpox cases to the nearest health facility or authorities to help curb the spread.
This coordinated response will be key to containing the sporadic cases and ensuring the virus doesn’t gain a stronger foothold in Liberia.
