The administrators of the late Martha Stubblefield Bernard’s estate, led by Mr. Ebrima V. Dempster, are urging the Liberian government to enforce a Supreme Court order to evict the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) from its national headquarters, which has occupied the estate’s property for nearly two decades. In a recent press release, the estate appealed to the Ministry of Justice and the Liberian National Police for assistance in carrying out the eviction, criticizing the police for failing to provide the necessary support despite a court request.
Mr. Dempster revealed that since a 2017 Supreme Court ruling, there has been no formal lease agreement between the estate and the CDC, though the party had been given six months to negotiate terms. However, after that period ended, the CDC did not follow through. While the party made a payment for six years of arrears, it still owes rent for nearly a year.
CDC leaders, including Chairman Jangar Kowo and Secretary General Jefferson Koijee, claim the eviction attempt is politically motivated, with some accusing the Unity Party-led government of weaponizing the judiciary against them. Despite these accusations, the estate insists it is simply seeking the enforcement of the law. Koijee further called on CDC supporters to resist the eviction.
