A significant policy change has been announced by the Liberia National Police (LNP) and the Liberia National Commission on Arms (LINCA), marking a decisive move to bolster public safety. As of today, all previously licensed firearms in Liberia are now considered illegal following the revocation of firearm permits under the Firearm and Ammunition Control Act of 2015.
Key Details of the New Policy
- Revocation of Firearm Permits
With immediate effect, all firearm permits previously issued to civilians are revoked, making any firearms that were once legally possessed now illegal. This measure aligns with Part III of the Firearm and Ammunition Control Act of 2015 and its administrative regulations.
- Mandatory Surrender
Individuals who held firearms under the revoked permits must surrender their weapons to the LNP’s Small Arms Unit at its central headquarters in Monrovia. The LNP is urging prompt compliance to avoid legal consequences.
- Exemptions
Permits granted to diplomatic missions are the only exceptions to this policy. All other temporary licenses or permits are invalid from the policy’s effective date.
- Penalties for Non-Compliance
The LNP has issued a warning that continued possession or use of firearms without proper authorization will be deemed a violation of the Firearm and Ammunition Control Act of 2015. Violators will face severe legal penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
Objective of the Policy
The primary aim of this policy is to enhance public safety and security across Liberia. By revoking existing firearm permits and enforcing a mandatory surrender, the government seeks to create a safer environment for all citizens and residents.
Future Guidance
Further instructions on lawful firearm possession will be provided by the LNP in due course. For now, citizens are strongly encouraged to adhere to the new directive to avoid penalties and support the broader goal of maintaining peace and security in Liberia.
The LNP and LINCA call on all affected individuals and entities to cooperate fully, ensuring a smooth transition and contributing to national safety and security.
