Gbarnga, Liberia – Just weeks after it was unveiled as a symbol of progress in Liberia’s education sector, a newly constructed $1.6 million model school in Gbarnga has sustained heavy damage following a violent rainstorm on the evening of April 8, 2026.

The facility, funded by the World Bank and commissioned under the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, was envisioned as a modern learning center to improve educational standards in the region. However, the storm’s impact has now cast a shadow over the project’s durability and overall construction quality.

An on-the-ground assessment by reporters revealed extensive destruction across the campus. Portions of the roofing were ripped off, exposing interior ceilings, while the school’s solar power system, intended to provide consistent electricity, was also reportedly affected.

Additional infrastructure did not escape the storm’s force. A palava hut, sections of the perimeter fence, and an on-site billboard all suffered damage, leaving parts of the school exposed and raising concerns about safety and security.

The incident has sparked public scrutiny, with many questioning whether proper construction standards were followed and if the facility was built to withstand Liberia’s weather conditions. As authorities assess the damage, attention is now turning to accountability, quality control measures, and the long-term resilience of donor-funded infrastructure projects across the country.
