Monrovia – Prominent Liberian economist and political commentator Samuel P. Jackson has been released from the Monrovia Central Prison after securing a US$20,000 criminal appearance bond, following days of detention linked to the controversial death of his wife.
Jackson was remanded on Thursday, April 2, 2026, after the Liberia National Police charged him with multiple offenses, including manslaughter, negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, and aggravated assault in connection with the death of his wife, Toni Jackson.
However, developments in the case indicate a shift in the charges. According to a public statement by one of his lawyers, Cllr. Jeremiah Samuel Dugbo, the Special Grand Jury of Montserrado County has reduced the charges to manslaughter and negligent homicide.
The decision to grant bail comes after Jackson’s legal team filed a motion seeking his release while the matter proceeds through the courts. His release marks a new phase in a case that has drawn widespread national attention and sparked public debate.
Speaking following his release, Jackson expressed optimism about the judicial process, stating that he remains confident justice will ultimately prevail. He also emphasized the importance of laying his late wife to rest as the legal proceedings continue.
The case is expected to resume in court in the coming days, with both the prosecution and defense preparing for what is likely to be a closely followed legal battle.
