President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has ordered the immediate suspension of the Liberia National Tourism Authority’s (LNTA) newly announced fee structure, signaling a halt to its implementation pending further review and consultations with key stakeholders.

The decision follows mounting public backlash, particularly across social media, where many Liberians, especially young people, raised concerns about the scope of the fees and their potential impact on already struggling businesses and individuals within the tourism and creative sectors.

The concern of President Boakai over the state of Liberia’s youth continues to grow, as he acknowledges the influence and voice of a generation increasingly pushing back against policies they view as unfair. Many expressed frustration online, echoing sentiments that such measures “can’t be” accepted without proper consideration.

The fee structure, announced just days ago, quickly sparked criticism, with stakeholders questioning the Authority’s understanding of its regulatory role and the burden the fees could impose on ordinary citizens.

Addressing the issue, President Boakai made his stance clear, emphasizing both strength in leadership and sensitivity to public concerns.

I don’t plan on being a weak President, neither do I plan on being a wicked President,” he stated.

He further stressed the importance of due diligence and inclusive decision-making before implementing policies that directly affect citizens.

We should have all looked at the figures and what impact it would have on the people… we need to do that in consultation and make sure those fees are realistic… suspend those fees,” the President added.

According to the Executive Mansion, the directive is intended to ensure that any proposed fees align with Liberia’s broader tourism development goals while avoiding undue financial pressure on stakeholders. The move also opens the door for broader engagement with affected groups, allowing for a more balanced and informed approach moving forward.

The LNTA had introduced the fee structure as part of its regulatory mandate, targeting various tourism and creative enterprises. However, the rollout was met with mixed reactions, particularly from groups who felt overlooked or insufficiently consulted.

With the suspension now in effect, attention shifts to the anticipated review process, which is expected to provide clarity on the structure, intent, and long-term implications of the proposed fees.

As reactions continue to pour in, many Liberians view the President’s intervention as a defining moment, one that underscores the growing influence of public opinion, especially among the youth, in shaping national policy and holding institutions accountable.
