The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has announced a two-day intensive training program on social media monetization for Liberian content creators, scheduled for May 6–7, 2026, at the Bella Casa Hotel on 3rd Street in Monrovia.

The initiative, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, will bring together 150 selected participants drawn from a wide spectrum of the country’s growing digital creative community. Eligible creators include comedians, storytellers, challenge creators, reaction video producers, and others focused on engaging and entertaining online audiences.

According to the LTA, the training aims to equip participants with the practical skills and knowledge required to monetize their content on major global platforms, particularly Meta and TikTok.

Building Pathways for Meta Monetization

Meta, the American multinational technology company behind platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads, has already activated monetization tools in eight African countries, including neighboring Ghana. Earlier this year, LTA Chairman Clarence Massaquoi held strategic discussions with certified Meta executives in Lagos, Nigeria, laying the groundwork for Liberia’s inclusion in similar opportunities.

The training will cover key areas such as content creation tools, strategies for producing high-performing content, hands-on practical sessions, monetization pathways, and social media ethics. Participants will also be introduced to Meta’s eligibility requirements, which include being at least 18 years old, adhering to community standards, and meeting minimum follower thresholds, alongside the need for functional banking systems to facilitate direct payments.

Exploring TikTok Opportunities and Challenges

TikTok, the globally popular short-video platform owned by a Chinese company, will also form a major component of the training. Known for its powerful algorithm that enables rapid virality, TikTok has become a dominant force among younger audiences worldwide.

In March, LTA Commissioners Patrick Honnah and Ben Fofana engaged TikTok executives in Nairobi, Kenya, as part of efforts to position Liberia within the platform’s monetization ecosystem.

However, the LTA noted that TikTok monetization presents broader structural challenges. For countries to fully benefit, they must have robust data protection laws, reliable payment systems, clear tax frameworks, and sufficient local advertising investment, conditions that, according to the Authority, are yet to be fully met by any African country.

Application Process and Participation

The Ministry of Information’s Department of New Media is overseeing the application process. Interested content creators are required to apply in person between April 13 and April 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Applicants must submit a written statement outlining the type of content they produce and how the training will enhance their work. Due to limited space, only 150 participants will be selected for the in-person training.

To ensure broader access, the LTA has announced that the sessions will also be live-streamed for those unable to attend physically.

Driving Digital Entrepreneurship

The LTA emphasized that the initiative reflects a growing recognition of digital content creation as a viable economic pathway for young people. By enabling monetization, social media platforms can serve as catalysts for digital entrepreneurship, allowing creators to generate income while bypassing traditional barriers to entry in the formal economy.

Organizers expressed optimism that the training will inspire higher-quality, more engaging local content and strengthen Liberia’s presence in the global digital space.

Certificates of participation will be awarded to all attendees at the close of the training program.
