MONROVIA, Liberia – The Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) has officially commenced a nationwide Registration, Inspection, Classification, and Star Rating Exercise aimed at strengthening standards and regulatory compliance across Liberia’s tourism, culture, and creative sectors.

According to a public service announcement issued by the Authority, the exercise began in Montserrado County on April 7 and will run through May 8, 2026, before extending to other parts of the country. The initiative is being implemented in line with the LNTA Act of 2025 and is aligned with ECOWAS Tourism Accommodation Standards.

The nationwide effort is designed to improve service quality, enhance safety and sanitation standards, and promote professionalism within the sector. As part of the exercise, authorized LNTA Inspectorate Teams will conduct detailed assessments of tourism establishments, cultural institutions, and creative enterprises to verify their registration and licensing status.

Inspections will also focus on evaluating hygiene practices, environmental conditions, operational procedures, and customer service delivery, including spot checks to ensure compliance with established guidelines.

In addition to inspections, the LNTA is rolling out an awareness and stakeholder engagement campaign to educate operators on regulatory requirements. Guidance materials will be distributed to support businesses in meeting national and regional standards.

A key component of the initiative is the classification of accommodation facilities, which will be assigned official star ratings ranging from one-star to five-star based on approved criteria. The Authority emphasized that it remains the only legally mandated body responsible for issuing star ratings and installing classification signage across the country.

Unauthorized use or display of star ratings, as well as non-compliance with regulatory requirements, is strictly prohibited and may result in enforcement actions,” the statement noted.

The LNTA further urged all operators to ensure that their establishments are properly registered and licensed, maintain high standards of hygiene and safety, and fully cooperate with inspection teams during the exercise. Business owners are also encouraged to actively engage with LNTA personnel and provide feedback to improve service delivery.

The Authority described the exercise as a critical step toward enhancing credibility, strengthening consumer protection, and boosting investor confidence in Liberia’s tourism industry. Members of the public have also been encouraged to patronize only registered and officially recognized establishments.

Registration remains ongoing and can be completed both manually and online, with the LNTA providing support channels for inquiries and further information.
