The United Methodist Church has publicly reaffirmed its support for LGBTQ+ rights, issuing a clear and forceful statement backing gender inclusivity and the protection of transgender and nonbinary individuals across the United States.

Through its General Board of Church and Society, the denomination stressed that its position is “unequivocal,” grounding its stance in both faith and human rights principles. Referencing its 2020–2024 Book of Discipline, the church maintained that every individual is entitled to fundamental freedoms, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Church leaders framed the matter as a moral obligation, asserting that the defense of dignity and equality aligns with the core teachings of the faith. The statement comes against the backdrop of growing national debate and increasing legislative actions affecting transgender communities.

Data from the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law estimates that approximately 2.8 million people in the United States aged 13 and older identify as transgender. The institute has also reported that members of this community frequently face barriers impacting their health, financial stability, and overall quality of life.

According to the church, these challenges are intensifying. It pointed to ongoing incidents of violence, harassment, and systemic marginalization affecting transgender individuals. Young people, in particular, are said to experience high levels of bullying, rejection within families, and increased vulnerability within foster care systems. Adults, the statement noted, often confront workplace discrimination, public harassment, and abuse.

The denomination also raised concerns about policy trends, highlighting what it described as a decline in federal protections alongside a growing number of state-level laws restricting gender-affirming healthcare, access to public spaces, and recognition of gender identity in schools. Reports indicate that nearly 30 states have enacted measures limiting certain rights of transgender people.

In its message, the United Methodist Church underscored the spiritual dimension of the issue, warning that injustice undermines the inherent worth of every person. It called on governments, private institutions, and religious bodies to take active steps to address discrimination and advance equality.

The church further urged its congregations to foster environments where individuals of all gender identities feel accepted and valued, encouraging resistance to policies that restrict access to healthcare or legitimize unequal treatment.

The statement also acknowledged renewed efforts at the federal level, as U.S. lawmakers revisit proposals such as a Transgender Bill of Rights, aimed at strengthening legal protections in areas including healthcare, housing, safety, and economic opportunity.
