Monrovia — Liberia and the Republic of Türkiye are taking a significant step toward strengthening diplomatic and economic relations, as plans are underway for the opening of a Turkish embassy in Monrovia.

The development was discussed on Monday, March 23, 2026, when Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sara Beysolow Nyanti, hosted a senior Turkish delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The visit marks a key milestone in advancing cooperation between the two countries.

Speaking on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Minister Nyanti emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral engagement, particularly in areas of trade, investment, and infrastructure development. She highlighted ongoing diplomatic exchanges with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, noting his administration’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s development agenda.

A major point of focus during the meeting was the planned revitalization of Roberts International Airport. Minister Nyanti revealed that President Erdoğan has expressed interest in backing efforts to improve the airport’s operations, alongside the anticipated launch of Turkish Airlines flights to Liberia.

She welcomed the airline’s entry into the Liberian market, describing it as a boost to connectivity and economic growth. According to her, the Turkish government has been directed to ensure that both the embassy’s establishment and the airline’s operations move forward concurrently—an unusual but strategic decision reflecting the priority placed on Liberia.

Leading the Turkish delegation, Mustafa Kemel Basa, expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to expanding its presence in Liberia. He underscored Ankara’s intention to create a favorable environment for Turkish investors and businesses.

Basa explained that, traditionally, Türkiye establishes diplomatic missions before pursuing commercial ventures. However, in this case, directives from President Erdoğan have fast-tracked both diplomatic and economic engagements simultaneously.

As part of the process, the Turkish government has requested land for its embassy under diplomatic reciprocity arrangements—an issue Liberia’s Foreign Ministry says it will address promptly.

The delegation is also expected to engage with Liberian security authorities and officials at the Executive Mansion to ensure all logistical and administrative requirements for the embassy are met.

Minister Nyanti further encouraged Turkish investors to view Liberia as more than just a domestic market, urging them to consider its strategic position within the Mano River Union basin as a gateway for regional trade and connectivity.

She described the initiative as a cornerstone of Liberia’s economic diplomacy strategy, aimed at fostering mutually beneficial partnerships that deliver tangible outcomes for both nations.

Beyond infrastructure and trade, Türkiye has also reaffirmed its support for Liberia’s human capacity development, with plans to expand scholarship opportunities for Liberian students.

In a reciprocal move, Basa called on Liberia to advance its own diplomatic footprint in Türkiye by establishing an embassy in Ankara and a consulate in Istanbul. He extended an invitation to Minister Nyanti to visit Ankara to further formalize the next steps in the growing partnership.

The planned opening of the Turkish embassy in Monrovia is expected to usher in a new chapter of cooperation, anchored on shared economic interests, infrastructure development, and people-to-people exchange.
