Monrovia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated Mr. Jonathan K. Weedor to serve as Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), in the wake of the resignation of former Chairperson Davidetta Browne-Lasana.
The nomination, announced by the Executive Mansion, places a seasoned electoral figure at the helm of Liberia’s elections body, pending confirmation by the Liberian Senate.
Mr. Weedor brings more than a decade of direct experience within the NEC, having served as Commissioner from 2004 to 2020. During his tenure, he oversaw critical administrative and operational departments, including Human Resources, Finance, and Procurement. He also served as Acting Co-Chairman, playing a key role in steering the Commission through various electoral processes and strengthening public confidence in its operations.
Beyond Liberia, Weedor has contributed to electoral development across the African continent. He has participated in several international electoral missions in countries such as Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria, and has been involved in observation and assessment assignments organized by regional bodies including the African Union and ECOWAS.
Academically, Weedor holds a Master of Arts degree with Honors in Development Studies, specializing in Development Management, from the School for International Training in Vermont, United States. He also earned a Bachelor of Science degree with Honors in General Forestry from the University of Liberia.
Pending Senate confirmation, President Boakai has instructed that Weedor serve in the capacity of Acting Chairman until lawmakers return from their current recess.
The President expressed strong confidence in Weedor’s competence, integrity, and professionalism, emphasizing expectations that the NEC will continue to uphold transparency, independence, and credibility under his leadership.
The announcement was made in an official statement issued by Presidential Press Secretary Atty. Kula Bonah Nyei Fofana.
