The Government of Liberia says it is closely monitoring developments along the Liberia–Guinea border in Lofa County, assuring citizens that the situation is being handled with urgency and priority.
In a statement issued by authorities, Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone have jointly reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and stability along their shared borders. The joint communiqué emphasizes the importance of preserving the longstanding tradition of peaceful coexistence among border communities and calls for an immediate return to previously established positions in the disputed areas.
Liberian officials welcomed a directive issued by the Guinean government ordering its troops to pull back to their original positions along the border, describing the move as a positive step toward easing tensions and restoring normalcy.
However, the government acknowledged that earlier troop movements observed in Sorlumba, Lofa County, raised public concern. Following diplomatic engagement, Guinean authorities clarified that those movements were part of the operational process to implement the withdrawal order.
The three countries have also reiterated their commitment to resolving all border-related issues strictly through peaceful diplomatic channels, in line with international principles that promote dialogue, negotiation, and non-violent conflict resolution.
Immediate Measures Announced
To support ongoing efforts to stabilize the situation and prevent further escalation, the Liberian government has announced several immediate actions:
All operations of BK Enterprise, along with sand mining and other related activities by any company operating in the Lofa border area, have been suspended pending the outcome of a comprehensive investigation by the National Security Council of Liberia.
Residents in border communities are being urged to remain calm, abide by the law, and avoid taking matters into their own hands. Authorities say joint security forces will continue to oversee efforts to restore order and ensure the safety of all citizens in affected areas.
The government has also issued a strong warning against the spread of misinformation or unverified reports that could inflame tensions or undermine national security. It cautioned that such actions will not be tolerated and will be addressed in accordance with Liberian law, while encouraging the media to report responsibly and seek official clarification when necessary.
Authorities reaffirmed that Liberia remains committed to protecting its territorial integrity while working collaboratively with neighboring countries to maintain peace and stability within the Mano River Union.
