Monrovia, Liberia – March 10, 2026 – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has announced a temporary ban on the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages at gravesites as part of public safety measures ahead of the nationwide observance of Decoration Day on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

According to the police, the restriction will apply to all graveyards and burial sites across the country during the holiday. Authorities say the move is intended to maintain order while preserving the dignity and respect associated with the annual observance.

Decoration Day in Liberia is traditionally marked by families visiting cemeteries to clean, decorate, and honor the graves of their departed loved ones. However, officials say the prohibition on alcohol is necessary to prevent disorderly behavior and ensure the solemn nature of the occasion is upheld.

The Liberia National Police is therefore urging members of the public to fully comply with the directive during the celebrations.

In addition to the restriction, the police disclosed plans to deploy officers and establish snap checkpoints at strategic locations within the city and surrounding communities. The checkpoints will help regulate traffic and ensure road users can move freely and safely to their destinations during the busy holiday period.

Motorists and commuters are being encouraged to cooperate with traffic officers who will be on duty throughout the day.

The Liberia National Police thanked the public for its understanding and cooperation, noting that collective compliance will help maintain safety, order, and respect during the Decoration Day observance.
