Monrovia, Liberia — State prosecutors have formally petitioned Criminal Court “A” at the Temple of Justice to transfer the high-profile Capitol Building arson case out of Montserrado County, citing concerns over fairness and jury impartiality.

The motion, filed by the Ministry of Justice, was submitted before Resident Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie. Prosecutors argue that intense media attention, mounting public pressure, and alleged efforts to influence the jury pool have created an environment that could compromise the integrity of the trial.

According to the prosecution, relocating the case is necessary to safeguard the defendants’ constitutional right to a fair and impartial hearing.

The case stems from the fire that damaged Liberia’s Capitol Building and has drawn national attention due to the stature of several accused individuals. Among those charged is former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, along with other defendants who face counts including arson and attempted murder.

The prosecution has not publicly disclosed the specific location being proposed for the trial if the venue change is granted. Defense teams are expected to respond to the motion in court.

Judge Willie has yet to rule on the request, and proceedings are expected to continue as the court weighs arguments from both sides.

This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
