Confusion broke out during an Economics lecture at the University of Liberia’s Capitol Hill campus on Wednesday after a student identified only as Mercy reportedly lost US$200 while in class.
Eyewitnesses from Econ 314, Section 13, told reporters that Mercy was seen holding the money earlier in the lecture, though some classmates claimed it could have gone missing before she entered the classroom.
The situation quickly escalated, forcing the class to come to a halt as murmurs and arguments spread among students. Campus police were later called in to handle the matter.
Officers reportedly conducted a search of the classroom and questioned several students. A male student who sat next to Mercy was briefly detained for interrogation, but no evidence linking him, or anyone else, to the missing money was found.
Despite the police’s intervention, the cash was never recovered. The incident left the class deeply divided, with some insisting the theft occurred inside the lecture hall, while others believed it happened elsewhere.
“It was total chaos,” one student recounted. “Nobody wanted to continue the lecture until the issue was resolved.”
As of now, the University of Liberia has not made any official comment on the matter, though campus security has confirmed that investigations are still ongoing.
