The administration of Ricks Institute has revealed that Emmanuel Tolue, once hailed nationwide as Liberia’s “Integrity Icon,” is currently struggling to pay his tuition at the institution.
Tolue, now 18, became a national figure in 2021 when he returned US$50,000 he found along a highway in Nimba County to its rightful owner, Madam Musu Yancy. His rare act of honesty earned him widespread praise and promises of scholarships from individuals, institutions, and government officials, including members of former President George Weah’s administration.
Despite the public recognition and pledges made in his honor, the school has disclosed that Tolue remains partly enrolled and owes more than US$2,000 in tuition.
What was once a story of moral triumph has now turned into a sobering reminder of how quickly public promises can fade. Years after his moment of national glory, the young man once seen as a symbol of Liberia’s integrity struggle is now fighting quietly to stay in school.
