A heated public debate has erupted after Simeon Freeman, political leader of the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) and businessman, showcased two luxury Richard Mille wristwatches said to be worth more than US$400,000 each.
The revelation came during a live appearance on OK FM, where Freeman casually boasted about owning the high-end pieces. His remarks quickly spread across social media, sparking anger among many Liberians who questioned the sensitivity of such comments at a time when most citizens are struggling with high living costs and limited opportunities.
“This is exactly why services like DSTV and other bills are so high in Liberia – the rich brag while the poor suffer,” one caller fumed during the broadcast.
On Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), users expressed disappointment, contrasting Freeman’s luxurious lifestyle with the daily economic hardship faced by ordinary people. Rising prices of food and basic commodities, along with widespread unemployment, remain pressing issues for many households.
While a few defended Freeman’s right to enjoy his wealth, critics say the boast underscores the widening gap between Liberia’s political elite and its struggling population.
So far, Freeman has not issued any statement beyond his comments on the radio.
