Liberia’s political atmosphere is once again under strain following explosive allegations by Jefferson Tamba Koijee, Secretary General of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), who claims that the Unity Party-led government is plotting to arrest former House Speaker, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa.
Koijee made the statement on Thursday via social media, alleging that President Joseph Boakai’s administration is planning to have Koffa arrested at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 6. However, Koijee did not provide any specific reason or legal basis for the alleged plan, nor did he present evidence to back his claim.
“🚨 ALERT! 🚨
We have received credible intelligence that the murderous Boakai-Koung regime is planning the arrest of Hon. Speaker Cllr. Fonati Koffa tomorrow at 10AM!
Let it be known: ANY attempt to arrest the Speaker will be met with STIFF and UNCOMPROMISING RESISTANCE! The people will not sit idle while this tyrannical regime weaponizes state power against its opponents.
Touch one, touch all!”
– Jefferson Tamba Koijee, CDC Secretary General
No Explanation, No Evidence
Koijee’s statement stops short of explaining why the former Speaker is allegedly being targeted, leaving the public and political commentators guessing. With no official charges disclosed, the allegation is stirring more questions than answers.
As of the time of this report, the government has made no public comment in response to the claim. Repeated attempts by Geez Liberia to contact officials at the Ministry of Justice and the Executive Mansion were unsuccessful.
Mounting Speculation
Koffa, who served as Speaker of the 54th Legislature and remains an influential voice within the CDC, has recently come under political spotlight due to his criticism of President Boakai’s anti-corruption efforts, which the opposition often describes as a campaign of political retribution.
With no clear indication of an investigation against Koffa, some analysts suggest Koijee’s claim could be a preemptive political move, possibly aimed at deterring any legal action against CDC figures or to galvanize the party’s base.
“Touch One, Touch All”
Koijee’s post ends with a threat of “stiff and uncompromising resistance,” signaling the CDC’s readiness to confront any perceived attempt to intimidate its members. His use of the phrase “Touch one, touch all” echoes past CDC mobilization language during moments of political tension.
Civil Society Urges Restraint
In response to the rising political rhetoric, civil society organizations are calling for calm and transparency.
“If there is a lawful reason to arrest anyone, including former officials, the government must come clean and follow due process,” said Maima Kallon. “At the same time, opposition leaders have a responsibility not to stoke panic or incite unrest.”
Uncertainty Ahead of Friday
Whether or not Former Speaker Koffa will be arrested on Friday remains unclear. What’s certain, however, is that this latest development has injected fresh uncertainty into Liberia’s political scene.
For now, Hon. Koffa has not issued a statement in response to Koijee’s claims, and there is no sign of increased security around him.
Geez Liberia will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as it unfolds.
