The distinguished British barrister who defended Liberia’s ex-president in one of the most consequential trials in African history has passed away.
The Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone (RSCSL) has officially confirmed the death of Courtenay Griffiths, KC, the lead defense counsel who represented former Liberian President Charles Ghankay Taylor during his war crimes trial before the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
Griffiths, who was 69 years old, passed away under circumstances that have not yet been publicly disclosed. His death has drawn tributes from legal professionals and colleagues who knew him for his fierce courtroom advocacy and unwavering dedication to legal representation, even in the most controversial of cases.
Griffiths was first appointed as Lead Counsel for Taylor in July 2007, a role he carried out until the conclusion of the trial phase in May 2012. In a powerful return to the case, he was reappointed in August 2023 to serve pro bono, at Taylor’s request, underscoring the depth of their professional relationship and the continued relevance of his legal guidance.
In the official press release issued from The Hague, key figures of the RSCSL paid tribute to Griffiths:
Principal Defender Ibrahim Yilla described him as “unyielding and eloquent beyond measure in presenting his case before the Special Court.” RSCSL President Justice Richard Lussick remembered him as “a fine lawyer.” Registrar Binta Mansaray praised him as “forceful and kind.”
Before joining the Taylor defense team, Griffiths had a long and respected career practicing law at the Bar of England and Wales, known for his articulate legal style and principled stands on justice and due process.

The RSCSL, which now oversees residual legal matters such as sentence enforcement, witness protection, and archive maintenance, extended its condolences to Griffiths’ family and loved ones.
“Courtenay Griffiths was more than just a lawyer in a courtroom, he was a symbol of what it means to defend justice, even when the world is watching with judgment,” a legal observer noted.
As the legal community reflects on his legacy, one thing is clear: Courtenay Griffiths, KC, leaves behind a record of bold legal advocacy and a lifetime devoted to the law.
🕊️ May he rest in eternal peace.
