Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe has commended House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa for what he described as a patriotic decision to step down from his post as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In a public statement issued Tuesday, Senator Snowe lauded Koffa’s resignation as a strong show of commitment to the Liberian Constitution and democratic values.
“Congratulations to Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa for upholding the Constitution,” the Senator wrote. “Let me also congratulate the Honorable Members of the House of Representatives for respecting the Constitution and calling for the election of a Speaker after the resignation of Speaker Koffa.”

Though Koffa has yet to state publicly the reasons for his resignation, political observers believe the move comes amid growing debates around constitutional interpretation and procedural accountability within the Legislature.
Senator Snowe, a former Speaker of the House himself, emphasized that the latest development signals a significant step toward strengthening rule of law in Liberia.
“This is a win for the rule of law and obviously a win for democracy,” he noted.
The Senate strongman also assured the public that he and others would honor the outcome of the Speaker election scheduled for Wednesday.
“We shall publicly congratulate the winner of tomorrow’s election and will give the winner the respect befitting of the office of the Honorable Speaker,” he said.
The resignation of Speaker Koffa and the swift call for new leadership reflect a rare moment of institutional unity and constitutional clarity in Liberia’s postwar democracy.
As the nation awaits the outcome of the speakership election, many see this moment as a test of the Legislature’s maturity and its commitment to democratic governance.
