Liberian Rapper Questions $25M Record Deal Fallout, Calls for Transparency in Music Industry
The Liberian music scene is buzzing with controversy after rapper S.I.O’s record deal with LIBMUZIK collapsed just days after a high-profile signing ceremony. The deal, initially announced as worth 25 million Liberian dollars (approx. $125,000 USD), has been called into question, with industry heavyweights like JB De General now speaking out.
The drama unfolded after S.I.O’s mother publicly doubted the authenticity of the $25 million figure during the signing. Shortly after, the deal was terminated, leaving fans and fellow artists questioning whether the amount was ever real.
JB De General, an award-winning rapper and member of Soulfresh, took to social media to support S.I.O’s mother, writing:
“Big record labels won’t disclose huge amounts to avoid public pressure… I support your mom for being honest. We shouldn’t act rich in public and be depressed in private.”
He also hinted at potential dangers, joking about “armed robbers coming for their share” if large sums are flaunted carelessly.
While JB De General’s comments have been seen as supportive, critics are asking why established artists didn’t guide S.I.O before he signed the contract.

“Must they give their opinions now that he has lost the deal?” one fan questioned.
The situation has sparked a broader conversation about transparency in Liberia’s music industry, with many calling for better mentorship for young artists navigating big-money deals.
Some, including JB De General, suspect the $25 million announcement might have been a marketing tactic.
“I’m still hoping this is just a stunt,” he wrote, while encouraging S.I.O to stay focused on his craft.
As the debate continues, fans are left wondering: Was the deal too good to be true? And will Liberia’s music industry learn from this very public fallout?
