The Liberia National Police (LNP) has suspended two officers for illegally entering and searching a parked vehicle near the Capitol Building last month, following a complaint from Representative Yekeh Y. Kolubah about missing cash and valuables.
On the morning of February 18, 2025, a gray Nissan Jeep without license plates, parked under the canopy of the Representative’s Wing at the Capitol, was unlawfully accessed by police officers. Rep. Kolubah later reported that US$25,000, LRD 2,000,000, a laptop, an iPhone, and jewelry worth US$2,500 were missing from the vehicle.
The LNP’s Professional Standards Division (PSD) conducted an investigation, leading to the suspension of:
- Chief Inspector Frank P. Banda (ID# 5396) – Two months without pay for unlawfully entering the vehicle.
- Sergeant Sam C.F. Karbah (ID# 4248) – One month without pay for unlawfully opening the vehicle.
While the probe confirmed the officers’ misconduct, no direct evidence yet ties them to the alleged theft. However, the PSD recommended further actions:
- Criminal investigation if future evidence connects the officers to the missing items.
- Questioning of Jack Traore, who allegedly drilled open the car’s door.
- Review of video footage to identify other individuals present during the incident.
The LNP reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and professionalism, stating:
“We take all allegations of misconduct seriously. While the suspended officers violated protocol, additional investigations will determine if they or others were involved in the reported theft.”
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the missing valuables and urge anyone with information to come forward.
The case has sparked discussions about police conduct and oversight, with some citizens calling for stricter penalties for officers who abuse their authority.
