If you thought getting around Monrovia was already a headache, brace yourself, it just got worse. The Liberia National Police (LNP) has slapped an immediate ban on motorcyclists operating between Boulevard Junction and Central Monrovia, as well as from Freeport to the heart of the city.
Deputy Police Director for Operations, Cllr. Nelson Freeman, made the announcement Thursday morning on State Radio’s Super Morning Show. According to him, this move is part of a larger security operation aimed at reducing crime and preventing chaos in the capital.
The decision follows a violent incident where unknown individuals dismantled police booths, removed security checkpoints, and blocked major streets. With an increase in motorcycle-related accidents and crimes in these key areas, the LNP says enough is enough.
But while the police are prioritizing security, the everyday reality for commuters just got harsher. Motorbikes were one of the fastest and most affordable ways to navigate Monrovia’s jam-packed streets. Now, without them, traffic congestion is worse than ever, and for many who relied on bikes for quick trips to work, school, or the market, this ban feels like a punishment.

The big question remains, how long will this last? The LNP says the restriction will remain until motorcyclists comply with necessary security measures. But for now, Monrovia is moving even slower, and frustration is mounting.
What’s your take on this? A necessary move for public safety or an unfair crackdown on the city’s most accessible transportation? Drop your thoughts!
