Our hearts are heavy as we extend thoughts and prayers to our fellow Liberians living in DR Congo and Rwanda amidst the intensifying crisis in the region. The situation has taken a dire turn as the M23 rebel group has seized control of Goma, the largest city in eastern DR Congo and the capital of North Kivu province.
This city, once a bustling hub, has now become a battleground, with thousands of innocent lives caught in the crossfire. The capture of Goma has sent shockwaves through the region, intensifying the already volatile conflict between the DR Congo and Rwanda.

Who Are the M23 Rebels?
The M23 is a militia group primarily composed of ethnic Tutsis. Originally active in 2012, the group reemerged in 2022, claiming to defend their community from persecution by the Congolese government. However, their resurgence has led to widespread violence, displacement, and accusations of war crimes, including forced recruitment and civilian casualties.
Kinshasa has accused Kigali of backing the M23 rebels, an allegation Rwanda vehemently denies. Rwanda, in turn, accuses DR Congo of hindering peace efforts and failing to disarm hostile groups operating within its borders. This blame game has pushed the region to the brink of a broader conflict, with dire humanitarian consequences.
The Capture of Goma
Goma, a vibrant city and economic hub, is now under M23 control. Its strategic location and resources have made it a focal point of the conflict. The fall of Goma has led to mass panic among residents, with thousands fleeing their homes. Reports of looting, violence, and a mass jailbreak from the Munzenze prison have only added to the chaos.

The Humanitarian Impact
The humanitarian crisis in eastern DR Congo is worsening by the hour. Over 200 staff members and 2,000 students remain trapped in Goma without access to water, electricity, or communication services. Thousands more have fled, joining overcrowded refugee camps or seeking safety in neighboring countries.
Aid organizations are struggling to respond due to limited access and resources. The United Nations has warned of a potential catastrophe if immediate action is not taken to address the growing needs of the displaced population.
Global Response and Mediation Efforts
The international community has taken notice. The United Nations Security Council has called for the immediate withdrawal of M23 rebels from Goma, urging all parties to cease hostilities. Countries like the United States, United Kingdom, and France have condemned Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23, demanding accountability and an end to external interference.

Meanwhile, African leaders from Angola and Kenya have stepped in as mediators, emphasizing that dialogue and cooperation are the only viable solutions to this crisis. Their efforts aim to bring an end to the conflict and restore stability to the region.
Solidarity with Our Liberian Brothers and Sisters
As Liberians, we know all too well the pain of conflict. Many of our fellow countrymen and women are living in DR Congo and Rwanda, caught in the middle of this crisis. Their safety and well-being are in our prayers during these challenging times.
This is a moment to reflect on the power of unity and the importance of standing together in the face of adversity. Let us continue to advocate for peace and support efforts to bring lasting stability to the region.
May peace prevail over violence, and may the efforts of mediators and global leaders bring hope to those who are suffering.
