The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has expelled Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah, emphasizing its commitment to discipline, constitutional integrity, and the unity of Liberia. This decisive action follows recommendations from the party’s National Disciplinary Committee, which cited concerns over conduct inconsistent with the party’s core values.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the CDC has also issued a stern warning to temporarily suspended lawmakers within the party, granting them a seven-day ultimatum to reaffirm their allegiance or face expulsion. This move is aimed at consolidating the party’s strength and ensuring its legislative members uphold the principles that define the CDC’s mission in Liberia.
Affirming Constitutional Leadership
Amid mounting political tensions, the CDC has reiterated its recognition of Fonati Koffa as the constitutional Speaker of the 55th Legislature. The party strongly opposes calls for Koffa’s resignation, warning that such an action would undermine the Constitution and destabilize the nation’s governance framework.
Moreover, the CDC has rejected the recent election of Richard Koon as Speaker, describing it as an unconstitutional maneuver orchestrated by the Unity Party. Backed by the Supreme Court’s interpretation of Article 49 of the Liberian Constitution, the CDC has reaffirmed its position on Koffa’s legitimacy and condemned attempts to bypass the rule of law.
A Stand Against Economic Destabilization
The CDC has expressed deep concern over actions taken by the so-called Majority Bloc in the Legislature, particularly regarding their handling of the national budget. The party views these efforts as a blatant attempt to exploit national resources and undermine the country’s economic stability. The CDC has vowed to hold President Joseph Boakai accountable should he sign what it describes as “treasonous legislation.”
Support for Peaceful Protest and National Unity
Acknowledging the growing calls for peaceful assembly, the CDC has reaffirmed its support for the constitutional right of Liberians to protest. The party has called on the government to ensure the safety and security of all citizens exercising this right, emphasizing that such demonstrations must remain within the bounds of the law.
Commitment to Liberia’s Future
In these challenging times, the CDC has pledged to safeguard Liberia’s peace, stability, and constitutional processes. The party remains steadfast in its mission to promote lawful governance, foster unity, and protect the nation’s democratic institutions.
As Liberia navigates these turbulent waters, the CDC is urging citizens, lawmakers, and leaders across the political spectrum to prioritize national development and unity. The NEC has assured Liberians and the international community that the party will remain vigilant in defending the country’s stability and democratic order.
This chapter in Liberia’s political journey highlights the CDC’s resolve to address internal and national challenges head-on while working to ensure a brighter, more unified future for all Liberians.
