After wrapping up his music tour across America, CIC has been taking in the sights, the sounds, and…well, the realities of life in the U.S. And he’s got some hard truths to share with us back home!
“If a person from America sends you $1, be grateful, because bills here are like village people—run, and they’ll chase you!” CIC’s humor shines through as he points out the relentless nature of bills in the U.S. Living here, he says, isn’t just about enjoying the glamour. Bills hit hard and fast—by the time the first of the month rolls around, many accounts are already in the red!
But it’s more than just money. CIC discovered a world where the system is so powerful, it feels like it owns you the moment you step off the plane at JFK. He joked about how quickly they initiate your “credit score”—a way for the system to size you up and see if you’re ready to join the workforce grind. It doesn’t take long to realize that if you want to enjoy the finer things, debt is a shadow that follows you around.
So, what’s a guy like CIC to do when he’s not performing? Turns out, he’s finding new empathy for all those Americans who visit Liberia and hit the clubs every night. It makes sense, he says, because over here, you’re stuck in 8-, 12-, even 16-hour workdays with little time for yourself. No wonder they’re ready to party non-stop when they come home!
If you’ve ever cringed at a U.S. restaurant bill, CIC can relate. “Taxes and tips are everywhere!” he exclaims, wondering why tipping can’t just be optional. Then there was the night he found out American clubs close at 2 AM! For someone used to Liberian nightlife, 2 AM is still early. But here, the music stops, and everyone heads home.
For CIC, this experience has brought a new appreciation for the resilience of Liberians living in the States. He’s come to understand that life in the U.S. really “ain’t for the weak.” For all those making it work on this side, CIC offers his “sincere apologies” on behalf of everyone back home.
So, next time CIC is back in Liberia, beers are on him—because, as he says, “life here is depressing” and there’s no place like home!
