GBARNGA: Bong County – As a means of promoting ‘Environmental Conservation and Peaceful Coexistence’ amongst residents of Bong County, the county’s Public Relations Officer has stressed the need to prioritize ‘tourism’ over destructive environmental practices.

In an interview with a team of journalists on Thursday, October 31, 2024, Mr. Christian Kangbo emphasized the importance of preserving the county’s natural resources and its rich cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations, thus describing it as the county’s backbone.

Mr. Kangbo reminded residents of the county that the county’s forests are not only meant to provide valuable habitat for wildlife but also contribute to climate regulation, clean air and water for the community, with a call to residents to refrain from engaging in violence against environmental laws and instead protect the environment and promote peace within the county.

“Tourism is the backbone of any country’s economy. We have a beautiful county with many historic sites and natural wonders. But if we continue to destroy our forests and engage in violence, we will not have anything to show to tourists,” Kangbo said.

Additionally, Mr. Kangbo added that a peaceful environment is essential for tourism and economic development.

He furthered that as Bong County seeks to promote tourism and further attract investors, every citizen must play their part in preserving the county’s natural beauty and further promote a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

“We cannot attract tourists if our county is known for violence and conflict. Let us work together to resolve our differences peacefully and create a welcoming environment for visitors,” he stated.

Meanwhile, some residents in the county who also chat with reporters have welcomed Mr. Kangbo’s message, with a promise of amplifying the message of environmental conservation and peace to their peers in their respective communities.

The conversation and maintenance of Liberia’s natural resources are key pillars outlined in goal #15 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Goal#15 of the SDGs states that Life on Land must be protected, restored, and promoted for sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, the sustainable management of forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and biodiversity loss.
